Stimulus : response

I always enjoy a wander in the Hepworth's garden, which was designed a few years ago by Tom Stuart-Smith and features lush swathes of planting, with lots of grasses that move in the breeze. It has an appropriately sculptural quality in itself. Having immersed myself in the Sheila Hicks exhibition (see previous posts) I found I saw the garden with fresh eyes, seeking out the mounds and skeins, as well as the colours inherent in it.

Sheila Hicks has created a new monumental column sculpture, especially for this garden, woven of weather-resistant fibres.

At this time of year the garden has these amazing seed heads, dark and stark against the pale concrete and soft grasses.

  1. I can feel the wind on my face as those grasses bend down. What wonderful textures that have been planted next to each other!
