Victoria Mills, built in the 1870s, was a large mill manufacturing wool worsted for coats and dress materials. Like nearby Salts Mill, it housed all the manufacturing processes from receiving the raw wool to producing the finished cloth, all on one site. It closed as a textile mill in 1992. Newmason Properties bought the derelict site in 2003 and carried out a £70m redevelopment, which included converting the Old and New Mills for residential use and building some modern apartment blocks on the site.
By contrast, the ultra-modern Ortho-Care building (see also yesterday's post), designed by Riverside Architects, opened in 2012, and manufactures orthodontic and dental equipment.
Whether the new orthodontic building will weather as well as its predecessor?
ReplyDeleteOne wonders what Salt would make of the new building.
ReplyDeleteThe reflective properties of the newer building do offer a bit of blending in with the older environment...within limits of course!
ReplyDeleteWhich one will last longer?
