I enjoyed a wonderful day out to The Hepworth gallery in Wakefield, named after the sculptor Barbara Hepworth, who was born and raised in the city. It was good to revisit, after almost a year. The gardens, planted two years ago and designed by Chelsea gold medal winner Tom Stuart-Smith, have now matured and the sweeps of planting with lots of rippling grasses and sculptural shapes look stunningly good against the uncompromising modernist concrete of the gallery.
'Pitchfork (Yellow)', an eyecatching sculpture by Sir Michael Craig-Martin, and 'Turning Forms' by Barbara Hepworth are among a few exhibits in the gardens. The latter was designed as a kinetic structure, to revolve on a plinth, but apparently it no longer does so.
The plantings look wonderful contrasting with the modern building!
ReplyDeleteQuite a modern design, but in a good way.
