Here's another park with a bandstand. This is Myrtle Park in Bingley. The bandstand is a good deal older than the one in Roberts Park (where the original had been demolished and was replaced a few years ago). I think this one is Edwardian, apparently manufactured in a foundry in Glasgow, before being installed in the park in 1913. It is still sometimes used for brass band concerts, though it has been subject to a few incidents of vandalism in recent months.
That's a rather fine bandstand. I wonder how many of these structures are left in the country, and how many disappear every decade.
ReplyDeleteI wonder how popular band concerts are and whether there is a lot of support for maintaining them and the bandstands.
ReplyDeleteBritain no longer has the money for an effective Army, but we do have no less than 20 fine military bands which entertain the public in shopping malls and squares around the country. Whether they still use "built for purpose" bandstands I do not know.

ReplyDeleteThis brings to mind several similar ones I have seen in different places around the country. I also remember seeing a concert from a similar structure in Italy.
