Kildwick to Skipton along the canal

The sun came out intermittently as I walked beyond Kildwick and on to Skipton. The towpath was in better repair than the earlier stretch from Silsden, making the going a lot less muddy and despite the continuing strong headwind, it felt like a more pleasant walk. The scenery along this part is gentle, not particularly arresting but all quite attractive. Apart from the constant noise of the traffic, you might forget that the main Skipton to Keighley road runs right beside the towpath, just over a hedge, for much of the way.

There were dramatic storm clouds ahead as I looked along the river flood plain towards the market town of Skipton.

Lambing is just starting, by the looks of it. These little ones looked very newborn. Coming into the big wide world was obviously pretty exhausting! Aw...

I loved the splash of bright white blossom against the dark wood.

Exactly 100 miles to Liverpool along the canal... By the time I got to Skipton I'd walked about 7 miles of it. That was enough for me! There are marker posts at one mile intervals.

On the outskirts of Skipton, there is another boat hire business and lots of moorings and boat-related businesses. On my walk, I did pass one or two privately owned narrowboats moving up the canal. It was the first day of our slightly loosened lockdown regulations, so some people were making the most of the freedom to get on the move again after so long.

  1. These photos show Yorkshire at its best. Lovely! For the new milestones we can thank the Leeds and Liverpool Canal Society.

  2. Grand scenery, perfectly photographed. Traffic on the main roads has been back to normal for a while, lockdown or no lockdown.
