Bubbles

As I passed Hirst Lock the other day, the water pouring down the overflow channel was churning up foam. It doesn't usually do that, so maybe some detergent or chemical had got into the water somehow. It didn't look very attractive overall but I noticed that small sections of it had interesting patterns of reflections, bubbles and swirls. I took a few photos to play with later and have put them into a multi-image grid.

In many ways we had enough of 'bubbles' during 2020. Isn't it surprising how many new terms we've learned? Bubbles, R numbers, self-isolating, superspreaders, lockdown... The Oxford Dictionary has recorded 47 significant new words for 2020 (HERE), when it usually only chooses one. The word 'Brexit' is now a thing of the past so we just have to make it work from here onwards. We can't undo what is done. We must all take a deep breath and seek to make the best of this New Year. Even if things aren't at all how we would really like them, there is lots to be thankful for and still plenty to look forward to. Onwards and upwards....!

  1. We had similar problems in the Weser due to farmers spreading fertilizer on their fields. The contaminated rain run-off into into a waterway encourages growth of alga.
When the water falls over a weir this alga is maxed with air and causes foam.

  2. Yes, new words, new concepts that would never have been imagined on New Year's Day 2020. And now we slide into 2021, hoping for many better experiences for each other. I like watching the swirls that water makes, and those bubbles illustrate its movement well.

  3. Last week, we went for a walk and saw similar bubble patterns in the water from a dam which was really churning away. At first, I thought as you did that someone might have put some liquid soap or detergent in the water, but my husband said it was all just "water power." The river was higher that day because of recent rainfall and snow melt. The next time I will be sure to take some photos as you showed in this post, it makes for a great photo opportunity. Thanks, Jenny for always looking around and showing that there's lots to see, even in the simplest things.
Also thanks for your comment on my year-end post. It was nice to "hear" from you and I always enjoy your photo excursions, so thanks back to you and best wishes for 2021.

  4. That is an interesting 3x3 matrix. Each image is nice, but your choice to show it in matrix format makes the whole even better. Well done, jennyfreckles.

I hope your 2021 is great. Go get your vaccine as early as possible and begin enjoying the ability to interact in person with friends again.
