Nunnington's gardens

Nunnington Hall's gardens are also relatively modest for a country house but pleasing nonetheless. To the front there's a gravelled courtyard, with a walled garden and lawns around the side of the house. The gardens are cared for organically, and there is an orchard and a vegetable garden with an area for 'cutting flowers' which are used in displays in the house.

There are plenty of seats dotted around and the lawned area to the south of the house had all sorts of games laid out - badminton and croquet were proving popular with visitors.

I liked these pink flowers, which I thought were a type of agapanthus, though they are usually blue. I now think these are Nerine Bowdenii, an autumn flowering bulb. Pretty anyway.

A metal horse sculpture looked quite convincing at a distance - though I prefer willow sculptures to these metal ones.

Less convincing but actually more real... there was a peacock strutting about - minus tail feathers, though. I think they moult once the mating season is over.

A comma butterfly had its wings well stretched out, perhaps trying to catch a few rays of weak sunshine on what was generally an overcast day.

In the veg garden, the bearded gardener didn't look to be doing much but standing there. 😂

The sheltered walls were covered in vines, though the grapes looked quite small and still hard.

  1. I've never seen apple trees growing at a slant...but then I thought, the better to reach the apples!

  2. Beautiful gardens. The metal horse is beautiful, but looks out of place in a way.
