June is the month when our roses come into bloom, and a stroll around Saltaire when I returned from holiday had me noticing and admiring a wide variety of them. There's a lovely curvy hedge of pink in Roberts Park and white ones along the top terrace path.
Elsewhere in the village they appear in various small gardens in a variety of shades. They seemed to go out of fashion for a few years, possibly because they need a bit of nurturing and pruning, but maybe they are having a renaissance. They were a flower that my mother loved and perhaps because of that I love them too, especially the scented ones.
The blooms on this pretty pink and white variety grew so densely together that it looked like it had made its own bouquets.
The drought and heat in June, of course, had a harsh effect on our gardens and the roses did seem to be suffering a bit, with lots of dropped petals.
They are always so beautiful to see. Every colour is a winner.
