Aah... The Hepworth in Wakefield is definitely one of my happy places. I love the gallery's sculptural architecture, so fitting to the artworks inside. It was designed as a home for Wakefield-born sculptor Barbara Hepworth's work and has many other interesting pieces in its collection, as well as holding exhibitions of different kinds. (Clicking the label 'Hepworth' below will take you to some of the other times I've visited.)
The views from its huge windows take on almost a breathtaking quality: framed by the plain white plastered walls, they give the appearance of artworks in themselves.
I could sit for hours just watching the swirling waters of the Calder, which flows round the building. My grandgirls were fascinated by the writhing, ever-changing foam patterns too and even started sketching them.
In recent years a garden has been created between the gallery and the neighbouring converted mill, Tileyard North. Designed by Tom Stuart-Smith, it's full of lush planting with swaying grasses and plants that in themselves have a sculptural quality. It was meltingly hot out there so I didn't linger this time!
The name "Calder" always seems to summon up words like "cauldron" and "caldera" - most appropriate for your picture of the swirling waters. Perhaps your young artists would enjoy looking online for Maggi Hambling's paintings of swirling waves as inspiration.
ReplyDeleteI love your photos of the swirling water and the swaying grasses! The planting is delightful. I wonder how many people take the time to stop and take in such lovely surroundings! I wish I was nearer to visit! ( Sal, Sal’s Snippets)
ReplyDeleteLove your shots of the water. For some reason we didn't go to that museum when we were in the area. Spent a lot of time at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.
ReplyDeleteA lovely property!
ReplyDeleteLovely textures and patterns from nature!
