Colours Uncovered

'Colours Uncovered' is the new exhibition for spring at Harewood House - and very fascinating it is too. It looks at the history of colour related to items in the House's collection, from paintings to porcelain, and includes contemporary works by artists Chris Day, Max Lamb and Cecilia Charlton.

These displays (pictured) were exploring historical pigments and dyes, mostly derived from plants and minerals. The swatch card of embroidery silks was an old example from the Society of Dyers and Colourists, an institution based in Bradford with historic links to the local textile trade.

  1. Until you get to arsenic green, these probably were non-toxic colors. My guess at least. Love the silk board!

  2. Beautiful! I'm always enraptured by color--just looking at a big box of crayons makes me happy.
