Jublilee party fun

The Queen's Platinum Jubilee was a long weekend of seemingly endless celebration, both in London and around the country. Sadly - as this is Britain! - the weather deteriorated and, certainly here in Yorkshire, became very cold and then drizzly, just as we were gearing up for our street parties. My church had a party in the carpark (and it was freezing cold!).

We were honoured by a visit from Bradford's current Lord Mayor, Councillor Martin Love. He is a Green Party member and has represented the Shipley ward as a Councillor for 20 years. He's a really lovely man, genuine, thoughtful and dedicated. He works as a dry-stone waller, after a career in IT. He lives locally, runs with Saltaire Striders running club and is a fantastic local representative. All three of our Shipley councillors are Green and they get involved with our communities and get a lot done, which is just what you want from your local council representatives. I was delighted that he and his wife, the Lady Mayoress, consented to having their photo taken, alongside our Vicar, the Rev'd John Rainer.

In the church, congregation members had made a displays for each of the seven decades of the Queen's reign. I can, of course, remember all of them personally! The photo below represents the 60s. Our Sunday service also featured music and hymns from each decade.

Our flower arrangers had arranged some beautiful and patriotic displays. It's a skill I don't possess and I think what they can create is wonderful.

There was plenty of bunting adorning properties in Saltaire village. I think a party was scheduled in Roberts Park on Sunday afternoon but the rain and cold made me decide to stay in and stay warm!

  2. I must comment that your vicar is certainly tall! And I'm glad to see the Mayor's wife has some kind of title as well...though it may be only honorary. Green Party is well represented there...I wish it were many other places these days.

  3. I have checked out a lot of the Jubilee celebrations online and seems everyone was having a grand time despite the weather. In view of what's been happening here in the U.S. it was a pleasant change.

  4. Not only is your vicar tall, (or perhaps the mayor and mayoress are short), but he is a tough cookie to be wearing bare toes in that weather!

  5. I remember the Coronation mug presented to Yorkshire schoolchildren in June 1953.
