Alnmouth

Northumberland break 3

I spent some time exploring Alnmouth, an attractive and historic coastal village dating back to 1150, encircled by golden sands. In the 18th century it was a significant port, exporting grain and importing guano from Peru for use in agriculture. Much of the village is now a conservation area and it has many historic buildings that were once granaries. The port deteriorated as the sands continually shifted and a violent storm in 1806 completely rerouted the course of the river estuary. The coming of the railways ended the need for a port but opened up the area to tourism.

(Alnmouth was featured in the BBC1 TV series 'Villages by the Sea', presented by the archeologist Ben Robinson. Very interesting series, if you get chance to watch it.)

The top photo is taken from the estuary mouth, looking over to Coquet Island. The following two were taken on a different day, from the other side of the River Aln. (Blogger seems to have destroyed the sharpness of the images!)

  1. Very familiar territory for me as I used to lead walks from there when I worked for HF Holidays. I'm very fond of Alnmouth.

  3. That looks like a lovely area. Blogger always seems to lose details.

  4. Oh. All so lovely. Marooned in Texas in the hot summer I am filled with longing.
