St Oswald's Community

Yorkshire holiday 5

Friends of mine have moved recently to set up a small Christian community in St Oswald's House in Sleights, which was formerly run as a pastoral and retreat centre by the nuns of the Order of the Holy Paraclete. (Nothing to do with parrots! It's another word for the Holy Spirit.) It will still be a place of prayer, rest and retreat, welcoming visitors. I'd booked one of their self-catering suites and very comfortable it was, too. My week away coincided with a heatwave - not good news for all the long hikes I'd planned but it meant evenings exploring the extensive gardens and grounds around the House were blissful, with golden light illuminating the lovely views of the Esk valley. (Yes, those are beehives in the top photo.)

The main house, above, is not huge but it's very comfortable and welcoming. My own quarters, in an adjoining annexe (just in shot behind the summerhouse below), had roses outside and sweeping vistas of the gardens and hills beyond. So peaceful.

I notice my posts are showing up on people's sidebars fine except yours where it has stayed at the bottom but at least is a link to my post.

  3. How nice that you booked yourself a retreat and your photos show that is was a lovely place to spend time alone -- and with your camera, Jenny.
