Pass progress

It appears that they have finished building the fish pass on the river beside the weir at the entrance to Roberts Park. They started in March just as the lockdown began here, so it has taken a long time. It still seemed to be blocked by a barrier at the top so no water was running through it (though a few days before I took these photos, when the river was high, water was crashing over rather spectacularly). I have to say it doesn't really improve the view at this iconic spot but I suppose the aim - to allow salmon to travel upriver to spawn - perhaps excuses its utilitarian appearance. Maybe one day I'll be able to see a fish leaping there.

  5. Great catch of the flock of birds! The salmon will certainly appreciate the help.

  6. Yorkshire Forward have been asked to finance more fish passes on the River Aire so that the salmon could reach Bingley and travel up to Gargrave to spawn in December-January each year. Fish passes are also being fitted to the River Wharfe, one example being at Garnett's Mill in Otley.
