The gates to the courtyard in the middle of the Stable Block are often closed but when they're open there is a delightful glimpse of old cobblestones and a rather wonderful wisteria vine curling around one of the doors. The block is now used as residential accommodation. Its original purpose was as stabling for horses, when a horse and carriage was the way gentlefolk travelled and many goods were transported by horse and cart. It's a bit further down the hill from the main entrance to Salts Mill, sandwiched between the church and canal. Of course, canal boats were towed by horse in those days too, but I don't think that the stable block was a facility for boat horses.
The charm of cobblestones rise up in your photograph. Beautiful place
