Flourishes

When you first visit the World Heritage Site of Saltaire, it is inevitably the big things that strike you - the vast bulk of Salts Mill; the carefully laid out plan of the village around it; the ornate church; the centrepiece of the Victoria Hall with the Factory Schools opposite, all guarded by the stone lions. I've lived here a long time now though. Those things, whilst still awesome, are familiar and it's the small flourishes that now catch my attention and sometimes amaze me.

Some of the cast iron railings around the village are, I think, the Victorian originals. They are rather ornate and yet interestingly scruffy. They have layer upon layer of paint and patina - and could do with another coat to smarten them up. (The ones around the mill itself have recently been repainted black and gold. The custodians of Salts Mill apparently have more money and more of an incentive to keep things up to scratch than our cash-strapped local council, who have responsibility for the general upkeep of the area.)

Colour or mono though...? That is the question... I give you both.
