Sauce for the goose

Well, not sauce exactly but duck food, which the Saltaire trip boat, Titus, sells to try and encourage people not to feed the geese and ducks with bread or other unsuitable stuff. A pair of greylag geese appear to have successfully hatched ten goslings, which are already a good size. The boat's helmsman was feeding them. It's a kindly act, I'm sure, though personally I'm not in favour of encouraging the birds. They are noisy, messy and there are already far too many of them, even without these new babies. The trip boat has been back for the summer for quite a few weeks, having overwintered at the marina in Skipton.

  1. The duck food reminded me of deer cracker made of rice bran to keep deer healthy in Nara Park. Anything salty, spicy, sweet, greasy, or wrapped in plastic is no-no to critters.

  2. The Canada Geese can be real nuisance here so there are always signs saying not to feed them but people still do.

  3. Between parents who bring bread bags full of crumbled bread, and those who let their kids chase the geese, I'm horrified at the next generation's treatment of wildlife. But I do like watching the goslings.
