The walls of the stairwells at Salts Mill have beautiful rough stone that shows the patina of age. So far, they've stood for 170 years, watching people hurrying up and down the steps on their way to work in the spinning sheds - or, now, anticipating a meal or a coffee, or a browse in the bookshops or an illuminating tour of the art galleries. There's something timeless and comforting about it all, as though they've soaked life in and held it safe.
'There are four kinds of people in the world, Ms. Harper. Those who build walls. Those who protect walls. Those who breach walls. And those who tear down walls. Much of life is discovering who you are.'

Love the textures and muted colours. As it happens I'm off to look at some walls today.
