Harlow Carr has a large expanse of woodland at the back, offering some traditional, soft-toned autumnal scenes. The gardens themselves are studded with feature plants and shrubs, like this fiery red acer that really shouted for attention:
A russet-toned maple looked softer and was nicely set off by the spiky leaves in the foreground - but it's that tiny red shrub in between them that really steals the scene.
Another acer, its fallen leaves making a vibrant carpet.
In these Covid days, you can leave the gardens through the 'night exit' (a gate that is normally there for the late stragglers to let themselves out, so no-one gets locked in overnight!) It avoids you having to pass indoors through the shop. The border up to the gate was eye-catching enough to make you want to embark on another tour of the grounds right there and then!
I'd never thought of trees being "shouty", but I see what you mean. I usually spot something on the way out that I missed on the way in and wonder if I should walk around again.
ReplyDeleteShouting color is a fun way of looking at the foliage. It makes the experience feel like being at a festival. Lovely photos.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos...I am imagining the crunch of the gravel under your footsteps as you find just the right views. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful place!
ReplyDeleteYour certainly have a lot more green in your area than here now, Jenny. After our first pre-season snow this past Friday, most fall color is a thing of the past, sadly.
ReplyDeleteYour second shot is my favourite.
