Golden Acre Park

Golden Acre Park is a public park between Leeds and Otley. It has a lake, gardens and a large area of woodland and, if that's not enough to explore, it is bordered by two nature reserves. It was initially opened in the 1930s as a privately run amusement park and near the café you can still see part of the miniature railway that used to be an attraction. It's now managed by Leeds City Council. The lake has a pleasant circular walk all the way round, though after rain it was rather muddy. It's one of those places where I have yet to find a really good photographic composition, though the splashes of autumn colour around the lake did help. (Photo taken a couple of weeks ago.)

The downside is that it attracts a lot of visitors and, although there is a large carpark, even on a weekday it was rammed. Luckily I managed to slot into a space quite quickly but as I was leaving there was a queue of vehicles looking for spaces. Once in the park people tend to spread out so, apart from around the café and the area at the end of the lake where people congregate to feed the ducks and swans, you can enjoy a peaceful and leisurely stroll.

Of course, the news from our bit of the globe is that England has been put into quite a strict lockdown again from today. All but essential travel is banned, so we are forced back to tramping our local paths again, as we were in the spring. I don't have many photos stored up either, so you'll just have to explore the delights of Saltaire and its immediate environment with me, at least for as long as I can conjure up some vaguely interesting photos!

  1. We here in Germany have also just started a strict November lockdown. Restaurants and pubs are all shut. However, the children are still going to school. Coronavirus 19 disciplinary control has reverted to the State as co-ordination has proved better. The death toll in Germany is around ten thousand souls.

  2. This picture is so calming--which I'm in need of, as you may imagine. I am so hopeful that the embarrassment in the white House is defeated soundly and leaves quietly (not a lot of hope for that second part.)

  3. Sorry you all are hunkered down again...but I hope it stops the spread of the pandemic. Our numbers sure have climbed in the last week. I'm going to be walking wearing a mask from here on out.

  5. Lovely pastel colours and tranquil capture.
It's only this year that Golden Acre has become so busy. In the past you could find a parking space even on a high summer weekend. It looks to me that a lot of people have discovered the joy of great outdoors in these troubled times, which is good. It's just that the Council should come up with some additional parking now.
