Around Fewston

After spending ages in the woods photographing snowdrops, I enjoyed a brisk, breezy walk down to Fewston Reservoir, which has a footpath right round it. It's a pleasant circuit of about four miles, with terrain varied enough to make an interesting ramble.

In places the wind was really strong, causing fascinating waves and patterns on the surface of the water. We've had a fairly dry winter so far. Though it's often been dull and drizzly, we've not had a lot of heavy rain or snow so the water level is not as high as it often is.

Fewston is one of a series of reservoirs built in the 1870s in the Washburn valley. The picture below is the view from the dam wall, showing the spillway that connects Fewston to neighbouring Swinsty Reservoir.

  1. It's easy to spend longer than anticipated photographing snowdrops! Impressive view in the last photo - just for a moment I thought you'd bought a drone!

  2. I took a spillway photo the other day...haven't gone through that day's batch to edit them yet. This looks like a much bigger (say 4-5 times?) "lake" than the one I walk around usually, which is a 0.55 miles in circumference, without many variations on it's path.
