First snowdrops

It's always a joy to see the first snowdrops in flower. Their green spears pierce the hard ground well before anything else blooms. Then their little petalled bells unfurl and dangle as if shy, though their bright white gives them away. There were daffodil and crocus shoots appearing too. Soon this little patch, under the trees, will be really colourful.

I have a couple of tubs on my balcony and there are narcissus and tulip bulbs just poking up through the soil there as well. It feels to have been a long winter - and perhaps more to come - but for now I am cheered by the promise of spring.

  1. I love snowdrops! In German, they are called Schneeglöckchen, literally "small snow bells", which suits them really well, I think.
Strangely enough, the first flowers I have seen to appear last weekend were not snowdrops but aconites. Snowdrops have been following in the course of the week. Yes, there will be more cold weather and possibly snow and ice before we can really call it spring, but the promise is already there - and it will be kept.

  2. What a nice collection of snowdrops near that cemetery. You must have been down quite close to them to get those great shots...kudos to your knees!
