Travelling east from Shipley along the Leeds-Liverpool canal, you pass under Junction Bridge, so called because it was here that the main canal joined a branch canal that went right into the heart of Bradford. (Do you remember the Grete Marks mural I featured, depicting the canal basin in Bradford? HERE)
The old bridge dates back to 1774 and allowed horses towing the barges to pass from one canal towpath to the other. The Bradford Canal closed, finally, in 1922 and was eventually filled in, leaving only this stub at the junction. It had been beset right from the start with problems with its water supply and quality, and was declared a public health hazard.
Apart from the noisy geese, it's all relatively tranquil here now, a far cry from its heyday as a busy working canal.
I enjoyed these, and the sign from a mishmash of areas "Dockfield Mills."
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a nice area.
