Typically, on the first day of the school holidays, the very long, dry, hot spell we've been having broke dramatically. We had drizzle interspersed with very sharp bursts of torrential rain and it was much the same across most of the UK. It was still warm and much more humid, of course, so after my walk I felt very sticky. Whilst it's a shame for all the children who want to play out, the rain is much needed. Our soil, lawns and plants are parched and the reservoirs almost empty. It felt like quite a novelty to have a walk in the damp, really refreshing. Whether the wet weather will continue, who knows? It did rain a little on St Swithun's Day, 15 July, which is supposed to herald forty days of rain but in all my years I've never noticed that old saying to be particularly true.
St Swithun's day if thou dost rain
For forty days it will remainSt Swithun's day if thou be fair
For forty days 'twill rain nae mare
It promises to rain off and on today here. And it's coolish at 67 F. Hope you get gentle soakers and not the torrentials that hit in the US so causing flooding.
ReplyDeleteWhat is that boat? Does someone live there?
ReplyDeleteYes, this is the Leeds-Liverpool Canal and the boat is a traditional narrowboat. People live on them or hire them for holidays.
DeleteHopefully you get a bit more rain in the days ahead.
ReplyDeleteThat is such an idyllic scene! I love it. Have you watched Robbie Cummings ‘Canal Boat Diaries’? We’ve enjoyed those programmes. We’ve not had much rain here in South Devon,, apart from a downpour at the weekend. I’ll need to go out watering, later. Sal 😁
ReplyDeleteThat's a beautiful photo ! You have the same weather as we do ! from very hot we got rain the next day but it was still warm and I thought I was in a greenhouse !
ReplyDeleteI love all those old sayings--true or not. We were just talking about a local saying--For every fog in August, there'll be a snow in winter. The old folks swore it was true , and it may once have been, but not anymore. We get lots of fog and very little snow.
